Resources in the Study of Technology

A novice to this challenging field might begin with Sara M. Watson’s “Towards a Constructive Technology Criticism”, Columbia Journalism Review, Oct. 4, 2016.  Then there’s Martin Heidegger’s famous essay “Question Concerning Technology”.  Lewis Mumford’s Technics and Civilization remains a classic in the field.  There is a website devoted to his work, the Lewis Mumford Center.  See “”websites” page for link.  Also see the International Jacques Ellul Society website.  Natasha Dow Schüll, whose riveting book Addiction by Design looks at machine addiction from the standpoint of the Las Vegas gambling casino ca. 2012, offers a chilling picture of human susceptibility to the siren call to oblivion.
